Bolivia / Sucre
Colonial Sucre
On May 25, 1809, Sucre saw South America's first "cry for freedom." Bolivia gained independence from Spain on August 6, 1825. Thanks to its many whitewashed colonial and neoclassical buildings, Sucre is also known as the White City. Worthwhile museums include the La Recoleta Franciscan monastery, the ASUR Museum of indigenous art and culture, and the Casa de la Libertad.
