La Paz was founded on October 20, 1548, on the banks of the Río Choqueyapu, and is today Bolivia's political center. Highlights include the colonial Calle Jaén, the Museum of Ethnography and Folklore, Plaza Murillo, Plaza San Francisco and the city's many colorful markets.
