Flamingo lagoons in surrealistic desert landscapes: the Nature Reserve E. Avaroa
3-6 days, from Uyuni
Laguna Colorada, Laguna Verde and many more breathtakingly beautiful lagoons home to thousands of flamingos, volcanoes, hot springs and bubbling geysers: a trip through the fascinating landscapes of the E. Avaroa Nature Reserve ranks among Bolivia's greatest adventures. On the way to the lagoons you can climb the volcanoes Irruputuncu (5,163m; active), Llicancabur (5,960m) or Uturuncu (6,008m). From Laguna Verde it's just 20 minutes to the Bolivia–Chile border at Hito Cajón (4,490m), and about two hours to San Pedro de Atacama, from where you can take excursions to the Salar de Atacama, the highland lagoons Miscanti and Miñiques, the El Tatio geysers and the Valle de la Luna. Onward or homeward travel is also possible via Calama and Santiago de Chile.
