Trujillo: Land of Moche and Chimú (north coast)

Before Diego de Almagro founded Trujillo (named after Pizarro's hometown in Spain) at the mouth of the Río Moche in 1534, the Moche (roughly 100–700 AD) and later the Chimú (roughly 750–1470 AD) had already built vast adobe cities, pyramids and palaces here. The Moche's Huaca del Sol was originally the largest pyramid in the Americas, while Chan Chan, the Chimú capital, was the largest adobe city in the world, covering more than 20km² and home to some 80,000 people.
