Francisco Pizarro founded the "City of Kings" on January 18, 1535. Highlights include the Plaza de Armas with its presidential palace and cathedral, the San Francisco monastery with its catacombs, the Huaca Pucllana adobe pyramid from the Moche culture, the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, and the seaside neighborhoods of Miraflores and Barranco.
