Colombia’s “White City” Popayán

With its many churches and its Holy Week processions recognized as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, Popayán is Colombia's Catholic heartland. But it's worth a visit at any time of year: founded in 1537, even before Bogotá, it's also known as the White City for its beautifully preserved white 17th-, 18th- and 19th-century architecture. With a bit more time, head to Puracé National Park or the impressive underground tombs of Tierradentro.
