Colombia / Villa de Leyva
Historic Villa de Leyva
2 to 3 days, from Bogotá
It was in Villa de Leyva, in the late 18th century, that Antonio Nariño first translated the Declaration of the Rights of Man into Spanish, and the town hosted numerous meetings of independence leaders during the wars of liberation. Today, with its colonial charm and wealth of nearby attractions — monasteries, archaeological sites, pottery workshops, the Santuario de Flora y Fauna Iguaque — Villa de Leyva is a popular getaway, especially for Colombians themselves on weekends. Much of the Netflix series "Bolívar" was also filmed here not long ago.
From Villa de Leyva you can either head back to Bogotá or continue on to Mongüí, Cocuy or Barichara.
