In the middle of the 18th century Jesuits settled in the Chiquitania, the country of the Chiquitos indigenous people. Due to their special architecture their churches in San Javier, Concepción, San Miguel, Santa Ana, San Rafael and San José de Chiquitos are world cultural heritage of the UNESCO.
